Taking the Power of One idea and replicating it to help others
Debra Berg launched the National Institute for Civic Enterprise in 2008. Based on her research for the book, The Power of One, she found that because civic entrepreneurs were unaware of similar social innovation efforts in other cities, they were missing out on the knowledge acquired by their counterparts. And often their efforts were even being duplicated right in their community! Debra has already connected major innovators and believes many more could benefit from a network of like-minded individuals, especially those wanting to replicate their successful initiatives nationwide.
Debra's foremost mission is to speed up solutions to all regions of the country. But she's also interested in helping innovators locate new sources of sustainable funding through partnerships with business. After relocating to Central Florida, her dream of a network found support with the Lake Eustis Institute. The "NICE network" is presently gathering momentum and growing with the help of donors and earned-income funding strategies.

Who are Civic Entrepreneurs?
Civic entrepreneurs represent individuals of all ages and backgrounds who have sacrified personal lives, incomes, time, and wealth to invent a solution to a community social challenge. Most often their civic enterprises result in a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation, but they also represent the growing number of "social entrepreneurs" who are developing earned-income strategies to fund their
social initiatives.![]()
